Two years ago I looked for a solution to get workload costs in k8s. Found kubecost, plugged it in. Mediocre thing overall. Integrations are paid. Confusing default dashboard, costs pulled from thin air. The best it could do - write “you could save $300” with no explanation where the number came from and what exactly to do. We got something out of it. A year ago IBM bought them, and even the basic open version was gone.
Just installed opencost - the thing that was used as the base for kubecost. Turns out it integrates with GCP billing, embeds into existing Grafana, and there’s a set of decent dashboards for it. Looks native, reasonable. GCP billing integration - real costs, accounting for all discounts.
Moral? don’t care.
